About Sugar Land, Texas

Sugar Land is known to be one of the fastest growing and wealthiest cities in Texas and currently has a population of around 82,000 people. In the first seven years of the 21st century, Sugar Land enjoyed job growth of almost 50 percent. It is located in Fort Bend County and was only founded in the middle of the 19th century as a sugar plantation, hence its name! It was incorporated as a city in 1959 and has enjoyed a dizzying rise to become Fort Bend County’s premier economic district. The land was settled by Nathaniel Williams in 1838, but his family sold the land known as the Oakland Plantation 15 years later. The plantation was bought by Colonel E.H. Cunningham and he developed a town around his sugar-refining plant in the late 1870s. It became a ‘company’ town controlled by the Imperial Sugar Company in the 1910s and was self-contained. Residents of the area voted to make Sugar Land a town in 1959 and a series of nearby master-planned communities sprang up shortly afterwards.

Throughout the 1990s, Sugar Land grew as fast as any community in America and this growth was not stunted during the early years of the 21st century. Though the Imperial Sugar Company refinery plant and distribution center was shut down in 2003, it had no effect on the booming local economy. Huge multinational corporations, such as Fluor Services, Baker Hughes, Minute Maid, Texas Instruments, and Tramontina USA, have set up offices in the area. At this moment in time, the city is negotiating with the communities of River Park, New Territory, and Greatwood with a view to annexation in the next few years.
