About Spring, Texas

The original town of Spring is a tiny area of approximately one square-mile. However, we are focusing on the Census-Designated Place (CDP) of Spring, which is home to around 54,000 inhabitants. The Orcoquiza Native Americans were the original dwellers in the area now known as Spring before settlers arrived in the early 19th century. A host of German immigrants entered the region in the 1840s and were joined by people from Louisiana a few decades later. The International and Great Northern Railroad was built through the area in the 1870s, and the town expanded somewhat. Yet, even the growth of the railroads did not increase the population which remained as low as 300 people in the 1930s. The local bank was robbed on several occasions during the 1930s with erroneous rumors that Bonnie and Clyde once held up the bank. When Houston’s suburbs expanded, Spring began to grow in earnest and had 15,000 residents in the mid-1980s. By the end of that decade, Old Town Spring was a recognized tourist attraction, and the Spring area doubled in size in 10 years.

Spring Today

Spring is one of the most affluent areas in the Houston area and the entire state of Texas. The average median household income in 2011 was around 30 percent higher than the state average. It is a fantastic location in the summer with average temperatures rising towards 80 degrees Fahrenheit; perhaps it is not so great if you struggle with heat! Even in winter, the temperature rarely goes below 40 degrees and is usually over 60 degrees! Retail, construction, and manufacturing make up over 40 percent of Spring’s employment, and unemployment is at the state average of seven percent. Over 20 percent of the Spring population over the age of 25 have a Bachelor’s Degree or better.

Life in Spring

If considering a move to the Houston-metro area, you should add spring to your list of possible destinations. House sales have been slow at the start of 2013, with just 190 properties sold in the first quarter; however, the third quarter of 2011 had more than 550 properties sold in the area. The average sale price has risen from $90,000 at the start of 2012 to $115,000 in the middle of 2013. Like many regions in Texas, property prices are beginning to rise, a sure sign that a recovery in the real estate industry is on its way. There are many large corporations providing job opportunities for residents in Spring. ExxonMobil has been showing an for a number of years and has began developing a new corporate campus in the north of Harris County, adjacent to Spring. The company is creating a series of energy efficient buildings and will be consolidating 10,000 employees to the complex in an ambitious project that is said to be one of the largest commercial construction projects currently ongoing in the whole of North America. The project requires 3,000 employees on most days and will feature an array of amenities with the aim being to turn the campus into a mini-neighborhood of sorts. This is exciting news for residents in nearby Spring who can look forward to more major organizations setting up shop in close proximity to the area, as it is in one of the hottest commercial real estate regions in the state of Texas.
