Keller Williams Realty is a real estate franchise business founded by Joe Williams and Gary Keller that operates throughout the world but has its main focus in the American and Canadian markets. Its headquarters is located in Austin, Texas and has been in that city since the company’s formation in 1983. The organization began franchising in 1991 in the United States before expanding to Canada 7 years later. It is one of the most successful businesses of its kind as its commissions and sales growth has increased by over 700% within the last 20 years.
In terms of real estate agent count, Keller Williams Realty is now officially the #1 real estate company in America and has approximately 80,000 associates worldwide. There are 700 global offices while over 90% of the company’s American offices reported a profit in 2012. One of the best examples of the organization’s recent success came in 2009 when its market centers enjoyed a combined profit of over $80 million. This was significant as virtually every other franchise in the industry sustained losses at that time.
The company’s global expansion has been rapid and profitable. Keller Williams only began looking beyond North America in 2010. However, by the end of 2012, there were franchise opportunities on offer in nine different countries including Vietnam, South Africa and Zimbabwe. This is only the tip of the iceberg as CEO Mark Willis recently announced expansion into four European countries: Turkey, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. This is part of the company’s goal of adding an extra 50,000 associates around the world within the next decade.
In 2007, the company launched its Luxury Homes program that awards members the opportunity to deal in the lucrative luxury property market. The following year, KW Commercial was launched. This part of the company aims to provide associates with marketing tools and technology. One key aspect of KW Commercial is that the agents enjoy a commission that is far higher than what they would receive in the majority of other brokerages in the United States.
Keller Williams Realty is also dedicated to giving something back to the community and set up KW Cares, a charitable organization that takes care of associates and their families if they are suddenly hit with financial trouble. In 2012, KW Cares gave approximately $2.7 million in donations to needy members.
The combination of an exceptional work ethic, a desire to help customers get the best real estate deals and a setup that allows associates to profit in good times and receive help when needed has helped Keller Williams Realty get to the top of the industry in North America. There will be no resting on laurels however as the organization is determined to become the #1 real estate franchise on the planet and it has the resources to achieve this goal.
