About Huntsville, Texas

Huntsville is a city with a population of just over 38,000, and it is located in Walker County, Texas. Its location, just 70 miles north of the city of Houston, makes it an attractive location for commercial real estate investors and families just looking for reasonably priced homes in a nice area close to a host of amenities. Huntsville first came to prominence in 1836 when it was established as a trading post. It became the home of the legendary Sam Houston, President of the Republic of Texas and U.S Senator. The city was also the home of Samuel Walker Houston, who was one of the great African-American pioneers in education. He founded the Galilee Community School in 1907, and in the modern era, the immense contribution made by the African-American community in the region has been commemorated in a monument entitled The Dreamers.

Huntsville Today

The city’s largest employer is believed to be the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, which has almost 7,000 employees. The Sam Houston State University is the next largest, with approximately 2,500 staff. The top five list of largest employers in the city is completed by the Huntsville Independent School District, the city’s Memorial Hospital, and Wal-Mart. As one might expect given the history of Huntsville, it has a wide range of cultures and ethnicities. Almost 27 percent of the population is African-American, while Hispanics make up almost 20 percent of Huntsville. Additionally, over 25 percent of the population has German, English, or Irish heritage. According to recent data, the cost of living in Huntsville is much lower than the average statewide. It is around 15 percent cheaper to live in Huntsville than the national average, so clearly value for money is easy to find in the city.

Life in Huntsville

The Hobby Lobby was a long-awaited commercial construction project for the area, which was completed in late 2013. It is estimated that the new store adds around 60 new jobs to the area. It has also been announced that another Goodwill store will be opened in the area, which will bring even more employment. There are also office buildings that are currently available to lease, with rates beginning at around $60 per square-foot. The level of home sales in Huntsville has not really changed a great deal in the last five years. The city has averaged around 100 to 150 home sales per month and the sale price has been in the $120,000-$140,000 range during this time. As it has been so steady, one may deem it to be a stellar investment, especially since it is likely that the residential and commercial real estate markets will begin to improve as the economy recovers. Ultimately, Huntsville is a fantastic place to live, with a rich heritage and close proximity to the booming commercial real estate market that is Houston. Just get yourself on the highway for a short drive and you’ll be able to enjoy all the benefits that one of America’s greatest cities has to offer.
