About Deer Park, Texas

Deer Park is a city within the Houston-Sugarland-Baytown metropolitan area and is officially located in Harris County. Its population is just above 32,000 according to the last Census and is the hometown of Chelsi Smith, former Miss USA and Miss Universe back in 1995. It is worth noting that the town is named as the ‘Birthplace of Texas,’ because the surrender treaty that resulted in the independence of Texas in 1836 was signed in a cabin in the area. Deer Park was founded by Simeon Henry West in 1892, and he gave the town its name because of the huge number of deer in the Gulf Plains. It was a small community that almost disappeared in 1922 when it consisted of just four houses, a store, a hotel, and a trio of carpenters! Thankfully, a Shell Oil Company was established just six years later, and the town began to flourish to the point where it became incorporated in 1948. The population almost trebled from 1970-2000 as the petrochemical industry spurred growth along with the Houston Ship Channel.

There are 14 major industries now located in a town with over 9,000 homes. It is a thriving community with numerous campuses in its school district, a library, various city parks, fire stations, and various light industrial companies. The Shell Chemical Company is one of the largest employers in the city, though it was the site of an ethylene explosion in 1997. Thankfully, disaster was averted and no evacuation of the city was necessary. The median income per household in Deer Park is just above $61,000 per annum, while median family income is around $66,000 per year, in what is becoming an increasingly affluent community in the Houston area. Deer Park has a healthy mix of ethnicity - approximately 25 percent of the population is Hispanic, while over 20 percent of the population has either Irish or German ancestry.
