About Baytown, Texas

Baytown is a city with a population of over 71,000 and is located in the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metro area. It is spread across two counties - Harris County and Chambers County. Baytown is the fourth largest community in the Houston-metro area and was incorporated as a city in 1948. The Baytown area was first settled in the 1820s and the current city was once three different towns. The idea of combining the three towns was first considered just after the World War I, but local opposition prevented it from going any further. However, it was agreed to combine the towns in 1947, and the city was officially founded in 1948. Once oil was discovered in the area in the 1920s, a number of immigrants settled in the region. United States Steel opened the Texas Works near Baytown in 1970, but closed down in the 1980s. However, it was rescued by Jindal Steel and now operates under the JSW Steel USA banner.

The construction industry is the biggest employer in the city and provides 20 percent of the jobs. Manufacturing and retail are the next largest sectors and provide 30 percent of local employment. There are three industrial districts that have been created by the city and these are the heart of the economy. Major companies such as ExxonMobil, Chevron Phillips, and Bayer are the most important organizations in Baytown. There are also major regional distribution centers and warehouses belonging to companies like Wal-Mart and Home Depot. According to recent data, the biggest taxpayers in Baytown are ExxonMobil, Verizon Southwest, Wal-Mart, CenterPoint Energy, and Continental Airlines.

Like many cities in the Houston metro area, Baytown is a multicultural area; 43 percent of the population is Hispanic, 38 percent are white, and 15 percent are African-American.
